You Looked Like My Father Then

Remember when the dinosaurs were so big

I could ride them

and see over the trees.

The sun felt so much closer then

and the moon talked me to sleep.

I always saw you in the stars

dancing eight counts around me

all around the earth.

In dreams there were spaceships

a way for me to get there

and see you face to face.

You looked like my father then

but like you’d always been.

When I awoke, clutching a tree

the bark a strength beneath my body

I felt your heartbeat trapped inside

pushing your blood like sap to me.

The sky travelled to meet you

and I just looked inside.
